Swansea welcomes first Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising group

Posted on 29th November 2016

Swansea’s first Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising group launched this month and is welcoming new members from across the region.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, powering world-class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and much-needed treatments for the condition. There are around 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, including over 43,000 in Wales alone.

The fundraising group’s committee consists of four Swansea residents: Non Thomas, chairperson; Linda Good, treasurer; Zoe Morelli, media officer; and Kate Townsend, secretary.

The group will be holding a social meeting once a month and everyone is welcome. They are also searching for possible meeting venues and are keen to collaborate with local businesses.

Linda, a 67-year-old semi-retired property landlord and the group’s treasurer, knew she wanted to support Alzheimer’s Research UK after seeing the devastating effects of dementia first-hand. Linda, who lives in Cockett, lost both of her parents to the condition.

Her mum, Helen Firth, had Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and passed away in 2010, aged 84. Around the same time, Linda’s dad, William John, had a fall which caused a bleed on the brain. He quickly developed vascular dementia and died in 2014, aged 92.

She said:

“Dementia research is such a worthwhile cause and one that’s very close to my heart. It doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed, but also has a huge impact on their family and loved ones. The sooner we find a treatment, the better.

“Our group is full of ideas for 2017 and we hope to raise lots of funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Everyone’s really friendly and we welcome anyone who would like to get involved.”

All funds raised by the Swansea fundraising group will support dementia research projects taking place at top universities in Wales.

Zoe Baggott, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“We’re thrilled that Swansea now has its very first Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising group. We’re so excited to see what the group achieves and it’s great to see such a dedicated bunch of supporters.

“Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK, yet there are no treatments that can stop or slow the condition. Only research can defeat dementia.”
