Surrey ‘Defeat Dementia Walk’ to raise vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK

10 April 2018

A Surrey fundraiser is hosting a Defeat Dementia Walk on Sunday 20 May to help raise vital money for dementia research.

Carol Franklin-Adams and her husband, Patrick, are Champions of Alzheimer’s Research UK and have already raised over £200,000 for the charity in recent years. One of their fundraisers was a Big Walk in 2016, which 150 people attended and raised £27,000 for the dementia research charity.

Those interested in taking part in the Defeat Dementia Walk can join Carol and other walkers at High Edser in Cranleigh from 12pm on Sunday 20 May, where there will be bacon butties served on arrival. There will also be tea, coffee and cake on completion of the walk.

Those taking part can choose between a three-mile or a five-mile walk on the day, or a gentle stroll around the garden. Children can take part in a ‘teddy bear’s picnic’ at the end of the walk.

To register in advance, you can email Carol directly at [email protected] or call her on 07775865125. Registration costs £20 for adults and £10 for children over four. The fee pays for entrance and includes a free t-shirt as well as refreshments.

Carol is encouraging people to sign up in advance, however people can also register on the day.

Carol and Patrick are passionate fundraisers for Alzheimer’s Research UK because Patrick has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Patrick was diagnosed with the disease in 2003 at just 59 years of age. The diagnosis came as a shock to the family, who never expected Patrick could have dementia at such an early age.

Carol said:

“When we started fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK, we wanted to make people aware of what Alzheimer’s was. We were really surprised by how few people actually understood it.

“We want to help fund research so that a cure might be found for future generations. Alzheimer’s is a cruel illness and we need to fund research into it.”

Georgi Welch, Regional Fundraising Officer for the South East at Alzheimer’s Research UK said:

“We would like to say a huge thanks to Carol and Patrick for running this event to help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“Dementia is now the leading cause of death in the UK, and 850,000 are currently living with the condition. Our mission is to find the first life-changing treatment for dementia by 2025. This can only be achieved through research.

“We would like to wish Carol and Patrick the best of luck for their Defeat Dementia Walk this May, and heartily encourage anyone in the area to go along for a fun, sociable day out for a good cause.”
