Team members at Wilko stores in South Wales are celebrating after raising over £86,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK in two years.
The dedicated team members from stores in Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Llanelli, Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend, raised the sum through a variety of events in support of the UK’s leading dementia research charity. The money raised will help to fund pioneering research in Wales into new treatments, preventions and improved diagnosis for dementia.
Alzheimer’s Research UK was chosen as Wilko’s regional charity for the South Wales Region for 2014/15 and 2015/16, with team members going above and beyond in their efforts to support the charity. Across the two years they took part in a host of events from beard shaves and fancy dress days to a barn dance to boost their fundraising total. Team members also helped to spread awareness about dementia and the need for research as part of their efforts, with some stores hosting a Christmas ‘memory tree’ in December where customers could write a memory to hang on a branch in exchange for donations. Meanwhile stores donated proceeds from the Welsh carrier bag charge to add to the total raised.
Hannah O’Sullivan, Charity & Community Coordinator at Wilko, said:
“As a family run business, charity has and always will be at the heart of everything we do here at Wilko.
“We’re proud of our team members who have given their time and effort to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, and very grateful for the generous donations made by the local community. And we hope that the money raised will go a long way in supporting the charity and the important work it does for people with dementia, their families and carers.”
Vicky Naylor, Corporate Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:
“We’ve been amazed by the commitment of Wilko team members over the last two years, and we’re thrilled that they have raised so much for vital dementia research. Thanks to their support, we’re able to provide crucial resources and equipment to our scientists, bringing new treatments for dementia ever closer.
“With 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, including over 43,000 people in Wales alone, one in three of us will know someone with this devastating condition. Research has the power to defeat dementia, and it’s thanks to the support of companies like Wilko and their fantastic team members that we’re able to fund our research.”
