Mother helped to stay at work after Alzheimer’s diagnosis: Alzheimer’s Research UK response

Alzheimer’s Research UK applauds the news that retailer Sainsbury’s helped an employee to remain at work for as long as possible following a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The story was shared on Twitter by her son Doron Salomon, who told how his mother was supported and treated ‘with class and dignity’ by the chain.

Hilary Evans, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity, said:

“The experience outlined by Doron Salomon highlights the importance of helping people with dementia to remain an active part of their community, and the huge impact this can have on a person’s quality of life. Employers can play a vital role in supporting people with dementia, and Sainsbury’s should rightly be applauded for working with Doron’s mum and family to help her remain at work for as long as possible.

“An estimated 40,000 people with dementia in the UK are under 65 – known as early or young-onset dementia. Dementia is a progressive condition, and in the early stages symptoms may appear gradually over many months or even years before a diagnosis is made. For many people with early-onset dementia, difficulties carrying out tasks at work may be the trigger for seeking a diagnosis, and it’s important for employers to be aware of the challenges dementia may pose, and to consider whether a role could be adjusted to allow people with the condition to continue working for longer.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Doron for encouraging people to support Alzheimer’s Research UK and help fund pioneering research. It’s our mission to bring about the first life-changing treatment for dementia, but we rely on public support to be able to achieve that goal.”
