‘Jason’s Jets’ brave world’s fastest zip wire for pioneering dementia research

24 August 2017

Intrepid fundraisers from The Perfume Shop braved speeds of over 100mph when they took on a zip wire challenge in support of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Jason Morgan and 15 of his colleagues came together to take on the world’s fastest zip wire – and Europe’s longest – raising more than £3,000 for the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

The daring challenge on Sunday 13 August was one of a series of fundraising events being taken on by The Perfume Shop staff, after Alzheimer’s Research UK was selected as their charity partner. To celebrate the retailer’s 25th birthday, a ‘25p/25c ask’ is also running at stores across the UK and Ireland, with customers given the option to donate 25p or 25c when they check out.

Jason, Area Manager, was joined by 15 of his colleagues who became known as ‘Jason’s Jets’ when they tackled the Velocity zip wire, which stretches a mile across the stunning Snowdonia landscape. Many of the team braving the zip wire’s heady heights and high speeds were spurred on by their own experiences of dementia.

Jason explained:

“We knew we wanted to do something a bit different, something that would be a challenge and a fun day out for us, as well as bringing us all together. Getting ready for the zip wire was pretty nerve-wracking, but it was brilliant to see the way everyone came together to support and encourage each other. It was exhilarating to feel the air around you and realise how fast you were going!

“As we were walking down the mountain afterwards I realised what amazing memories we’d made, and we want to keep those memories. It really brought home to me why we were doing the challenge.

“I saw how dementia affected my great aunt, Maureen, who sadly passed away last year: I had always known her as a really glamorous lady, but when I visited her in her care home she was a completely different person. A lot of the team had similar experiences, so we were all so proud to don our orange t-shirts for this fantastic cause. It was a great team effort, and to have raised so much is absolutely brilliant.”

Felicity James, Corporate Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“We’re completely blown away by this challenge! We can’t thank the team enough for their efforts, which will make a real difference to our research. The money raised from this challenge is enough to pay for vital resources and equipment for our scientists, bringing us closer to the breakthroughs we so urgently need. We rely on donations to be able to fund our research, and it’s thanks to the support of companies like The Perfume Shop that we’re able to continue our vital work.”
