Research is changing what’s possible for dementia treatment and diagnosis. Now Government must make sure the NHS keeps pace.

I'm ready for a cure, are you?

Around 1 million people are living with dementia in the UK today, rising to 1.4 million by 2040. But somewhere, someone alive today could be the first person cured of Alzheimer’s disease.

The first treatments that can slow Alzheimer’s disease are here, with more treatments and new diagnostics expected to follow. But these advances are not yet available to most people through the NHS.

Nobody should miss out on the progress dementia research is making possible.

That’s why we’re calling on the Government to make sure the NHS keeps pace – and is ready for the next generation of dementia treatments and diagnostics.

Why are we launching Ready for a Cure now?

Decades of research have transformed our understanding of the diseases that cause dementia. Now, for the first time, treatments are available that can slow Alzheimer’s disease.

And progress isn’t stopping there. New tests are making earlier and more accurate diagnosis possible, with more treatments and diagnostics expected to follow.

But people can only benefit from this progress if the NHS is ready to deliver it. Health professionals are working hard to support people affected by dementia, but the system is not yet equipped to deliver the next generation of treatments and diagnostics. Too many people already face long waits for a dementia diagnosis, and new advances will place further demands on services.

Government has an opportunity to act now – so nobody misses out on the progress dementia research is making possible.

"When my mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it was heartbreaking to learn there were no treatments that could slow or stop the disease.

Today, research is giving us hope that other families won’t have to go through what we did. That’s why I’m supporting the Ready for a Cure campaign"

What action should the Government take?

The UK has the research, talent and opportunity to lead the world in changing the future of dementia. Now Government must turn that progress into action. It should:

  • Test: Deliver a national plan to bring new dementia tests into the NHS.
  • Trial: Connect more people with dementia to clinical trials.
  • Treat: Establish a Dementia Drugs Fund to make new dementia treatments available while evidence is gathered about their use in the NHS

The science is moving forward.

Now it’s Government’s turn to get the NHS Ready for a Cure
