Herefordshire volunteers needed to help power fight against dementia

16 January 2017

The UK’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, is seeking fundraisers and volunteers across Herefordshire to support its important work in the region.

The charity is looking for people to help form new fundraising groups to raise vital funds and awareness about dementia. Members can get involved in a variety of ways, such as getting stuck into fundraising challenges to raise money for pioneering research, representing Alzheimer’s Research UK at events or spreading the word about the charity within their local communities.

The charity is also searching for individual volunteers who are happy to help make sure its fundraising events across the region run smoothly. This could include stewarding, collecting donations, manning stalls, serving refreshments or cheering on fundraisers and giving a much-needed boost of morale.

Alzheimer’s Research UK volunteers play a crucial part in the fight against dementia, which currently affects over 3,000 people in Herefordshire alone.

Rebecca McMann, 20, is a dedicated Alzheimer’s Research UK volunteer and fundraiser from Ledbury. She completed Target 1200 in 2014, where participants are tasked with raising £1,200 in a year. She has also organised sponsored walks over the Malvern Hills, spoken at local events on the charity’s behalf and is signed up to do a sponsored skydive later this year. She said:

“I lost three of my grandparents to dementia – Violet, Bert and Alec. Volunteering and fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK allows me to do something positive in their memory. I really enjoy getting involved and hope that I can raise awareness about dementia. Research is the only path towards beating dementia and it feels great to be supporting something so important.”

Each fundraising group needs a minimum of three core members to fulfil the roles of group lead, administrator and treasurer. Popular activities include coffee mornings, bric-a-brac sales, quiz nights and bucket collections.

Alzheimer’s Research UK Regional Fundraising Officer, Zoe Baggott, is on-hand to provide advice, materials and assistance when needed. She said:

“Community fundraisers and volunteers play a hugely important role in the fight against dementia, both through raising funds and helping to spread awareness of this cruel condition.

“Around 47 million people are living with dementia across the world, making it imperative that we do everything we can to beat it. Only research can find a way to stop the harm and heartbreak of dementia, and we hope through this appeal that we’ll build an army of volunteers across Herefordshire to help us tackle it.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK powers world class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia. There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this number is expected to rise to over 1 million by 2025.
