Gaming influencer plays Before I Forget as they partner with charity for World Alzheimer’s Day

21 September 2020

3-Fold Games, the microgame studio co-founded by Chella Ramanan and Claire Morwood, launched its debut game, Before I Forget in July 2020. Today on World Alzheimer’s Day (Monday 21 September) Before I forget launches its partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK to raise awareness and funds for the UK’s leading dementia charity.

Developed with support from medical professionals at Gaming the Mind, Before I Forget is a short narrative game about dementia, using gameplay and atmosphere to portray a confusing world where memories elude you.

Players step into the world of Sunita – a woman living with early-onset dementia. Wandering from room to room, players discover mysterious objects, each holding a fleeting, fragmented memory. Examining faded postcards, scribbled notes, photographs, and more to uncover Sunita’s past, piece together her life-story and understand her present.

Until the 4 October, 3-Fold games will be generously making a donation to Alzheimer’s Research UK for every product sold on Steam and Itch.io. Players can support Alzheimer’s Research UK by purchasing and playing this poignant and thought-provoking game.

She said:

“I am looking forward to playing Before I Forget during World Alzheimer’s Day. The gaming community is extremely open and provides a brilliant forum for starting conversations about dementia and my own personal experience.

“My gran has Alzheimer’s; it’s a horrible disease that nobody should have to suffer. Alzheimer’s Research UK is vital to advances in science and healthcare, so I wanted to give back to the amazing cause. Together, we can stop this disease. Please #ShareTheOrange”

Tim Parry, Director at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said,

Before I Forget is a poignant evocation of a heartbreaking condition and we are honoured to be chosen as charity partners for this game. World Alzheimer’s Day is a time to talk about dementia, a condition which still has a taboo surrounding it. Playing this game leaves the player with a very real sense of the impact of dementia and how it affects an individual and experiencing this helps build an appreciation of its reality.”

Claire Morwood from 3-Fold Games said:

“We decided on the subject of dementia for our game due to ideas our writer Chella had around the connection between memory and identity, and a shared desire to tell stories that are not often found in games.

“The more we developed Before I Forget, the more we discovered that a video game was an ideal medium for the story we were telling and allowed the player to really step into Sunita’s shoes and experience her life first hand.

“We are very excited at 3-Fold Games to be partnering with Alzheimer’s Research UK and to be helping to support this worthy cause. We are thrilled to be able to use our craft to raise awareness and to underline games as a power to reach new audiences.”
