Dementia researchers invite public to talks by leading experts

Scientists in Nottingham are inviting the public to a free event on Thursday 24 May to hear more about current progress in dementia research. There will be talks by leading professionals in the field including an opportunity for questions and discussion. The free event is organised by members of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Midlands Network Centre.

Dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK, including over 11,000 in Nottinghamshire. The condition, most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease, affects people’s ability to remember, think, plan and communicate. Sadly, while there are treatments that can help with the symptoms, there is currently no way to slow or stop the diseases that cause dementia.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. They fund more than £31m of dementia research across the country, which is helping scientists to better understand the diseases that cause dementia and develop new diagnostics, preventions and treatments.

The event provides the opportunity to hear from scientists and doctors studying dementia in the lab and in the clinic. Speakers include Sultan Chaudhary from the University of Nottingham, who will discuss his work unravelling genetic risk linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and Dr Eric Hill from Aston University who uses cutting-edge stem cell technology to explore the biological processes involved with dementia. Also speaking is Prof Eef Hogervorst from Loughborough University, who will outline the latest evidence about how lifestyle factors can affect dementia risk.

Prof Kevin Morgan is the Coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Midlands Research Network. He said:

“Dementia is now the UK’s most feared health condition, on a level with cancer. With an increasingly ageing population, it’s a condition that will affect more and more of us, so it’s important that people have the opportunity to understand more about it. This event is a fantastic way for people to hear about the vital research taking place to understand and ultimately beat the diseases that cause dementia. We hope it will be an informal and informative event for people in the area who may want to know more.”

Dr Katy Stubbs from Alzheimer’s Research UK will also be speaking. She said:

“Dementia touches the lives of millions of people, including many family members and friends working tirelessly behind the scenes to support a loved one with the condition. We know people have many questions about dementia and this event provides a great way to find answers, as well as meeting people in a similar situation. Research is providing hope for the future, but it’s not just about scientists in labs. People with dementia and their carers also play a critical role in shaping research and this open day is a fantastic opportunity for discussing experiences and exchanging views.”
