Call for determined volunteers to join fight against dementia in Bournemouth and Poole
Posted on 7th February 2018
Passionate volunteers in Bournemouth and Poole are being asked to band together to form a new fundraising group to support Alzheimer’s Research UK.
The UK’s leading dementia research charity is looking for people with a range of skills to help set up the group, which aims to raise vital funds and awareness across the region.
Members can get involved in a variety of ways, from getting stuck into fundraising challenges that raise money for pioneering research, to representing Alzheimer’s Research UK at events and spreading the word about the charity within their local communities.
Alzheimer’s Research UK’s regional groups play a crucial role in the fight against dementia, which currently affects 850,000 people in the UK. This number is expected to rise to over a million by 2025.
Dementia is a major problem in both Bournemouth and Poole, according to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s ‘Dementia Maps’ initiative.
The statistics from the maps show that there are 3,177 people living with dementia in Bournemouth. Meanwhile, there are 1,749 people living with the condition in Poole, meaning there are almost 5,000 people living with dementia between the two towns.
Alzheimer’s Research UK’s vision is a world that is free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia. This vision can only be achieved through the pioneering efforts of fundraising groups across the country.
If you are interested in setting up a fundraising group for Bournemouth and Poole, or taking part in fundraising activities, James Warren, Alzheimer’s Research UK Regional Fundraising Officer for the South West is on hand to help.
“Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK, yet there are no treatments that can prevent or even slow down the progression of this condition.
“Regional fundraising groups are vital in helping us to defeat dementia, both through raising funds and helping to spread awareness of this cruel condition.
“We’re confident we’re going to find passionate and dedicated fundraisers in Bournemouth and Poole with the same vision and I am looking forward to helping set up a fundraising group for these towns.”
