A joke a day

By Simon Gibson | Friday 13 December 2013
I recommended a book to my daughter, pointing out that it was a real page turner.
Her response?
‘Dad, I know how books work!’
Since 1 January this year I have been posting a joke a day on my personal Facebook account. I started this for fun, and to (hopefully) entertain friends. It became a bit of an obsession, and rapidly the challenge was to complete a joke a day for the year.
Then friends asked what I was going to do with the material – and an idea formed. I’m a passionate supporter of Alzheimer’s Research UK and it became apparent that putting my ‘year’ into a book could help to raise awareness and money for the charity.
Things are a bit tough this year – just wrapped up my son’s Christmas present – four AA batteries … with a note:
‘Toys not included’
There is now a website at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ajokeaday where contributions can be made towards the publication of the book, intended to be out late February. ALL proceeds of the book and any excess raised after publishing and printing costs will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK. Illustrations, editing and design time have all been donated. Apart from the physical publication of the end product there are no costs, and I hope we can make a significant financial difference through this project.
In the next few weeks, I shall return here to drop in the odd joke, and report on progress.
Awareness of dementia, and Alzheimer’s in particular, is very close to me for numerous reasons, and I know what an amazing job Alzheimer’s Research UK do with the funds they receive, so please help in any way you can – share the page above, contribute if you can and come back for a chortle.

Hi Simon,
I am looking to complete a similar project, would it be possible to chat to you about how you have managed this? This really is an amazing feat.
Well Done!
Thanks Sarah – plans are advanced and I hope to have the finished article for sale in March, with some exciting news still to come. If you get in touch with the folk at ARUK they can give you my contact details – happy to help!
Simon
The book is out today, available from Amazon and http://www.stellarbooks.co.uk – please head to Facebook and Twitter and use the hashtag #AJokeADay to help us raise more money.
