Aberdeen’s first Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising group has just launched and is welcoming new members from across the region.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, powering world class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and much-needed treatments for the condition. There are around 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, including almost 70,000 in Scotland alone.
The fundraising group’s committee consists of three Aberdeenshire residents: Alison Blaikie, group lead; Alan Flint, treasurer; and Caroline O’Hara, administrator. The group will meet regularly and everyone is welcome.
Alison, 48 from Elrick, began supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK when her dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She was made a Champion of the charity in 2014 in recognition of her tireless support. Her dad, William Kennedy, sadly passed away in 2012, having been cared for at home by his wife for many years.
Alison, who works as an administrator in Aberdeen, has been fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK for many years. She has raised thousands of pounds by organising highland treks and most recently by completing a 160-mile walking challenge last summer.
“I love getting together with friends and family to have fun and raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I passionately believe that a cure can and will be found for this devastating condition and I want to do all I can to help the charity make that happen. I can’t wait to get together with others who want to help defeat dementia.”
Funds raised by the Aberdeen fundraising group will support dementia research projects taking place at top universities all across the UK. This March, Aberdeen will also play host to the charity’s annual research conference, bringing over 400 world-class dementia researchers together in the city to share their latest findings and forge new partnerships.
April Davidson, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:
“It’s absolutely brilliant to see a brand-new Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising group in Aberdeen. We have so many fantastic supporters in the area, and I hope everyone will enjoy coming together and supporting dementia research.
“There are around 47 million people living with dementia around the world, yet there are no treatments that can stop or slow the condition. Only research can defeat dementia.”
