Grant review process

Alzheimer’s Research UK is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities and follows their guidelines for best practice in peer review. Grants are awarded entirely on scientific merit and on the basis of open competition. The quality of the application and applicants is the key determinant of outcome, although the strength of the dementia research environment within the institution is also considered.

Our Scientific Advisory Board, a panel of distinguished researchers with expertise in dementia, reviews all applications for funding. For triage rounds and grants with a short review time, decisions are made through email voting by the Board members. All other applications are discussed and scored in Board meetings. In some cases, such as for Major grants and Fellowships, applications are also reviewed externally by scientists who are specialised in the area of each application.
