Our running fundraisers’ stories should give you the inspiration to choose your distance, get training, and get sponsored for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Chartered accountant Glen Davis, from Essendon, has completed the latest leg of his world marathon challenge with the Berlin Marathon. This is the third of six marathons he is running around the world to raise £10,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK. He is being spurred on by thoughts of his 84-year-old gran, Matilda, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four years ago.
Glen, 27, ran the Paris Marathon and the Virgin London Marathon in April, and next on his list is Chicago in October, closely followed by Dublin two weeks later. His amazing running efforts will finish in January 2011 with the Miami Marathon. Glen explains his motivation for running and supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK:
‘I’ve always been very close to my gran and this cruel disease has broken the strongest woman I know. Having worked hard all her life, now she can no longer walk or talk or do anything for herself. Seeing her makes me realise the importance of completing these marathons to raise money for vital research. Words can’t describe how much I want a cure for this disease so that other people don’t have to suffer.’
Determined mum of two, Dione Priddy, aimed to raise over £2,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK running the Virgin London Marathon on 25 April 2010. She ran for her husband, Mark, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s aged just 36.
Mark sadly passed away just two weeks before the marathon, but due to overwhelming support Dione still took part in the race and blew her original target out of the water with sponsorship topping a staggering £18,000.
Dione, from Northampton, explained her motivation for running the marathon and supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK:
‘When Mark was diagnosed with early-onset dementia it was devastating for the whole family and especially difficult for our two daughters, Eleanor, 13, and Bethany, 11. Our world was turned upside down.
‘I felt helpless watching him gradually fade away, but decided I could make a difference by raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, something that I’ve been shocked to find is hugely underfunded.’
