Alzheimer's Research UK is delighted to have been named Iceland Foods' charity of the year for a second year. Following an amazing £1.2million raised for early-onset Alzheimer’s research in 2011, we are thrilled to help launch Cycle Britain - a brilliant bike challenge developed by Iceland to raise funds for our pioneering research in 2012.
Cycle Britain is a fantastic journey around the country taking place between 11 and 26 August 2012. You can join in on any of the 16 individual day or half-day events as the route visits everywhere from Edinburgh to Eastbourne and Newport to Norwich.
To get involved, all you need is a bike and the enthusiasm to cycle about 60 miles (or a half-day of around 30 miles) and pledge a fundraising total of £200. You might choose to cycle a leg near where you live or you might fancy a day at the seaside cycling from Worthing to Southampton.
Every penny raised will support Alzheimer’s Research UK in a crucial study into finding ways to detect the first changes in the brain that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The research would greatly improve chances of finding effective treatments. Accounting for two thirds of the 820,000 cases of dementia in the UK, Alzheimer’s is one of our greatest medical challenges. Scientists believe that treatments are more likely to be beneficial for people when given very early in the disease, and the Cycle Britain funds will support one of the world’s most ambitious projects for improving early detection.
