Scientists in Belfast to hold a free event about research on 11 March.

Scientists in Belfast will hold a free public meeting on dementia research to coincide with the start of the UK’s largest dementia research conference. The meeting, organised by researchers from the University of Ulster, is supported by Alzheimer’s Research UK.
The public meeting will be held on Monday 11 March and feature displays, information and short talks about dementia and the current research underway to tackle the condition. The meeting will coincide with the first day of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference 2013, a scientific conference which will see dementia experts from across the world travelling to Belfast to discuss their latest findings.
Gillian Conlane, Administrator for the Alzheimer’s Research UK Northern Ireland Research Network, helped to organise the event. She said:
“There is lots of fantastic research taking place here in Northern Ireland and we want to invite members of the public to come along for the afternoon and find out more about the research taking place on their doorstep. As well as talks about dementia, there will also be local dementia support organisations, and the chance to speak to researchers about their work. The meeting is open to anyone and is a great opportunity to hear more about the progress being made in understanding and treating this devastating condition.”
Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, who is speaking at the event, said:
“There are over 820,000 people in the UK living with dementia and more than 2,500 people in Belfast alone. With an increasingly ageing population, there is a desperate need to understand dementia and develop effective new treatments to stop it. We hope this event will provide the opportunity for people to talk to scientists, ask questions, and see the real impact that research can have on the lives of those with dementia.”
The meeting will take place on 11 March from 4.00–6.00pm at the Europa Hotel, Belfast, BT2 7AP. Refreshments will be provided and there is no need to book in advance. For more information about the event, download the flyer, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01223 843899.
